At Teen Impact, we believe that students hold the future. That is why we created Teen Impact Magazine, which promotes healthy choices and positive, uplifting media for middle school and high school students. It began in 2003, as an idea to create a magazine specifically for Utah, one that would benefit teens, by allowing students to publish their writings and artwork. Teen Impact gives students an opportunity to express themselves through the topics that interest them most.
In September 2006, the first issue of Teen Impact Magazine was distributed to 124 Utah high schools, encompassing nearly 125,000 high school students. Teachers and students were equally drawn to the magazine, as it covered a range of diverse stories and articles, written for the students, by students. There was now a source of media that was specifically for them, in which they could truly relate.
Teen Impact has teamed up with the Rachel’s Challenge Program, which is a foundation formed after the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, in Columbine, Colorado. Rachel Scott was the first student to be shot and killed on that frightful day. Her family, in hopes to prevent any further shootings, talk to 100,000 students each week on the importance of eliminating prejudice, daring to dream, choosing good influences, using kind words and actions, and starting a chain reaction. With the partnership of the Utah PTA, and with The Rachel’s Challenge Program, high schools around the country now share in the useful qualities of the magazine. Students, teachers, and parents continually comment on the success of the magazines in their lives, in the classroom, and in their homes. We would like to share with you a few of the success stories that have been collected.
“My name is Chad Shellabarger. I am a junior at Roy High School. I think your magazine is an amazing thing with a great vision. I am very grateful for the opportunity you are giving us teens by letting us have our own magazine.”
“Utah PTA can not think of a greater way to impact our students. The possibilities are limitless, from character building to life changing choices. We whole heartedly support TEEN IMPACT.”
-Debi Tabor, Student Involvement Commissioner
“Teen Impact” magazine is awesome! As a captain of my High School Football Team, I was amazed to read an article about our state finals game! There are so many positive and uplifting articles in “Teen Impact.” The magazine could definitely have a great influence for good in students’ lives. I would highly recommend it!” -TJ Robbins, high school student
“Teen Impact does just that. It impacts students in the classroom. I send a big thank you to you and your sponsors of the magazine for seeing that it gets to classrooms throughout the state. It gives kids a voice; that's a real positive in a society that has created a need for a voice for young students.”
-Leanna Cammack, English Department Chair, Cedar High School
As our work and efforts have proven to be a success, students nation-wide are now able to benefit from the magazine. It gives a voice to teens, who may otherwise, never have the opportunity to express themselves. The peer to peer mentorship has ultimately changed the lives of students. Teens will not only reach, but surpass their potential. Join us, in helping change the world, one teen at a time. Individually we can make a difference; together we can change the world. Our future begins now!
